How to use a convection oven as an air fryer

Convection ovens are ovens with a high-powered fan that circulates hot air inside the oven. This does not just reduce cooking times, but it also leads to greater constancy and permits you more space when it comes to frying foods. Just like a convection oven, air fryers use a fan to circulate hot air around the food, creating a crispy layer. However, air fryers are normally smaller, and their fan circulates air quickly.

Air Fryer produces great tasting results with little or no oil. Its powerful fan circulates the super-heated air at high speed, cooking the ingredients to a flawless crispy finish. These appliances are normally used for crisping and heating food, but there are several small differences between them. You may not have an air fryer and start doubting whether you can use a Convection oven instead. Let’s learn how to use a convection oven as an air fryer.

Convection ovens and air fryers cook food at about 20-25 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, considering the cooking temperature, the majority of air-fryer foods can be cooked using a convection oven.

You just require to make sure that there is enough airflow when cooking. When using a convection oven, a big air-frying basket or a pricked tray is recommended in order to get similar results.

And because air-fryer recipes are planned for small amounts of food, convection oven ingredients can be doubled. Ensure that you have spaced the food on the tray well, especially if cooking fried food. Spacing enough will permit enough air to contact both sides of the food.

The right cookware is a must.

You should use the right cookware for the best results. A perforated pan (perforated crisper tray) is a good option since it permits good air circulation on the food and around it. If you don’t have one, an oven-safe cooling rack can be an option. Just line the bottom of your oven with a baking sheet or aluminum foil to catch crumbs and drops when using the rack.

Cut the food properly.

Foods are cut in certain ways because of various reasons. For instance, French fries are cut in long sticks so as to increase their surface, permitting the outside to be brown more. Likewise, you are supposed to cut your foods in small-sized pieces or long sticks.

For foods like tofu (soya bean curd), you have to tear it into pieces but not slice it. The rough shape will permit crisping and browning of the rough edges.

Prepare the food well.

Before putting the food in the oven, make sure it is dry. Additionally, you are supposed to lightly spray your food using cooking spray or brush some vegetable or oil grape seed on it. This will promote crisping and browning. It will also give the food a deep-fried taste which everybody will love.

Make sure the food is spread out well.

Congesting the tray will make the food touch or pile up, and this will prevent browning on all sides. Overfilling blocks air circulation; as a result, cooking will be ineffective. It will also cause the food to steam rather than air frying or baking.

Make sure you have evenly spread the food and leave enough space between pieces to allow good circulation of air. You can moreover bake on some oven racks. However, don’t fill the racks from wall to wall.

Be detailed on how to adjust a recipe.

Air fryers usually cook quickly, and they are by far hotter than convection ovens. Thus, when cooking air-fried recipes in a convection oven, they might take longer. You should start checking if your food is cooked at the indicated time on the recipe.

Don’t forget to flip.

Air fryer recipes typically require flipping the food midway through cooking. It helps the food to cook and brown squarely. Don’t ignore this step when using a convection oven. After flipping, spritz the other side with additional cooking spray.  It ensures that both sides are crisp.

Watch out time

Although these two appliances have almost similar cooking times for recipes, note that air-fryers typically cook quickly than convection ovens. As a result, some recipes will definitely take longer to cook when using a convection oven. Check if your food is ready around the time stated in the recipe. If not ready, you have to keep checking after every two to three minutes. This will allow your food to be browner.

Low-sided roasting pans are the best to use

The convection oven works best if you use a rimless baking sheet to bake cookies or roast vegetables. Low-sided pans permit better circulation of air around the food, and this makes crispy foods to be crispier. This, however, has no importance for foods such as casseroles and cakes that don’t require to be crispy and count on the high-sided pans to keep their shape.

The majority of convection ovens can air fry food; however, not every air fryer can bring similar results. The major notable difference between a convection oven and an air fryer is the cooking space.

Can you use a convection oven as an air fryer?

Yes, you can use a convection oven to make air fryer recipes!

Is air frying the same as Convection?

Air frying is not deep frying. An Air fryer is actually a mini convection oven which use a fan to quickly circulate hot air, thus cooking food quicker and more consistently than a conventional oven would.

Do air fryers and convection ovens have similar work principles?

Yes, they work on similar principles of circulating hot air in a space to create smooth heating, slash the time for preparing the food.
